Case 2 - There are homeless people in Singapore

One of the stories that Mr Loh cited is about the homeless in the Lion City.

“The Singapore government always says there is no homeless in Singapore. Our ambassador to the United Nation also said there was no homeless in Singapore. But it’s not true,” he said.

Last month, Mr Loh went to Changi Beach and China Town and spotted there were quite a number of homeless people.

“You don’t see them during the day because they will be arrested by the police but at night and after midnight when you go to all those places you see that they come with their children and bring all their stuff and they sleep,” he said.

“When the government knows about this, they raid the places and fine them S$200 to S$300 dollars and says there are no homeless people. I just came to know earlier this month [April 2009] MCY did a raid on Changi Beach,” Mr Loh continued.

The homeless out of desperation have to find a little corner at Housing Development Board estates and spend their day there, Mr Loh said.

“They are homeless because they cannot afford to pay mortgage.

The banks come and chase you up and HDB will force you to sell your flats
According to the rule, if you sell your flat you are not eligible for rental flats,” he explained.

“If you sell your flat, then you apply to HDB for rental flats, they will say no. But it’s HDB which forces them to sell the flat. They have nowhere else to go they became jobless due to the economic recession.”
